About the piece
The Trio Elegiac for Violin, Cello and Piano is a work that was written between 2003 and 2004. This work arose from my interest in composing in classical formats such as this trio, and also from my interest at that time in working with more closed forms, especially with works written in one movement following the idea of Arnold Schoenberg's Chamber Symphony Opus 8. The work is composed on the basis of two ideas, one of a rhythmic character, with which the work begins, and a second idea of a more lyrical character. These two ideas are presented separately in the first section of the work. Then there is a short moment, like an interlude where these two ideas interact, to give way to a slower section, of a ritual character, where the lyrical aspect of the second idea is further developed. This is followed by a second interlude, with a more playful character, in the manner of a scherzo, to give way to the final section, which bears a certain resemblance to the first section in terms of its rhythmic character. The title of the work is inspired by the moments in which I began to write the piece, moments marked by intense personal memories mixed with the times the country was going through at the time. That's why I wanted to give it the title elegiac, to pay homage to that past time, and its rupturist ending and resolution.
