Marcelo Mella Lobos Violoncello
He began his cello studies in Los Andes at the age of 13. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Performance from the Universidad de Chile, under the professorship of Julio Barrios, and a Master of Arts degree in Music from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, under the professorship of Martin Osten, both academic degrees obtained with "maximum distinction".
During his career, Marcelo has participated in the concert seasons of the Music Department of the Universidad de Chile and the Music Institute of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. He has been a member of the Chamber Orchestra of the Municipal Theatre of Santiago, the National Youth Symphony Orchestra of Chile and the chamber orchestra Solistico de Santiago. He has also collaborated as guest first violoncello in the Camerata de la Universidad de Los Andes and recurrently as violoncello tutti in the Orquesta de Cámara de Chile (OCCh) and the Orquesta Filarmónica de Santiago.
Marcelo has had an active career as a chamber musician. Currently, he is a member of the "Dúo Mar" with pianist and UC academic Marcela Rodríguez, a member of the "Trío Ecos" and of the chamber opera company "Ópera de Bolsillo", founded by the national composer Miguel Farías. She has also participated in the chamber music cycle "Domingos Musicales" of the Teatro Municipal de Santiago and the chamber music cycle of the Music Department of the University of Chile. In 2018 he won with his string trio the 1st Prize of the "Chamber Music Competition" of the University of Chile.
In 2021 and 2022 he was the winner of the only Master Scholarship awarded by the Faculty of Arts of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile for the best entrance and, through public competition in 2022, he was the winner of the National Master Scholarship of the National Agency for Research and Development (ANID).
He has performed in important halls in Latin America and Europe, places where he has also perfected his skills by receiving masterclasses from prominent cellists such as Wenn-Sin Yang, Marcio Carneiro, Thomas Carpenter, Yuri Christiansen, James Yoo, Karel Steylaerts, Celso López and Heidi Litschauer, among others.
